President Joe Biden has recently announced plans to introduce new methane emissions legislation to help support his climate goals, while oil-producing states are taking various stances on local regulatory norms. October 2020 has marked a legislative proposal by the European Commission to introduce a new methane emissions strategy. In September 2021, the U. S. and the EU jointly announced a Global Methane Pledge in preparation for COP26.
